Not only was a wide variety of locally produced plainwares and redwares, used for daily chores, recovered but a high percentage of decorated wares was also discovered. The painted pottery most commonly discovered are the Salado polychromes: Pinto, Gila, and Tonto Polychrome.”

Silver Mound – Hixton, Wisconsin
©2011 John Wanserski for Creative Juice LLCFrom the Silver Mound Historic marker erected 1977: This large, isolated hill is a famous site where prehistoric Indians gathered to quarry a particularly attractive quartzite for the manufacture of chipped stone tools. Several aboriginal quarries are scattered along the rimrock of this mound. Thousands of tons of waste rock from these pits indicated that quarrying was carried on selectively over many centuries. Fields surrounding this mound are littered with quartzite fragments and flakes which accumulated during the process of making and shaping trade blanks for transportation to out lying areas. Stone spear-points, knives, and scapers made from this colorful material have a wide distribution throughout Wisconsin and portions of nearby states. It is known that the earliest Indians who migrated into the midwest, perhaps 10-12,000 years ago, made many spearpoints and knives from rock quarried here; thus this site is one of Wisconsin’s oldest archeological monuments. History relates that the first white explorers mistakenly thought that the Indians were mining silver. Hence the name “Silver Mound.”

Entrance to Besh Ba Gowah Archeological Park – Globe, Arizona
©2011 John Wanserski for Creative Juice LLC“This is the original entryway into the pueblo. This long corridor was a roofed hallway leading to the Central Plaza, the center of the site. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Besh-Ba-Gowah served as a redistributional center for goods such as shell and turquoise jewelry, painted pottery, and ceremonial activities. To protect these goods, control of access into the site was important.”

Ceremonial Room, Besh Ba Gowah Archeological Park – Globe, Arizona
©2011 John Wanserski for Creative Juice LLC“This is the first scientifically excavated ceremonial room ever discovered at a large Salado site. The room is surrounded on three sides by benches where participants sat and observed the ceremonies. Against the east side was a low altar. Above the altar is a smoke and echo chamber, used to enhance the various ceremonies. Below the altar is a small square hole (not visible in the picture) called a sipapu. The sipapu was filled with ground turquoise and sealed by a large quartz crystal. Anthropologists believe the sipapu represents an earth navel where spirits can pass from middle earth to this world.”
